Art and Design Technology
We believe that Art and Design Technology (DT) should be an important element of the school curriculum. Children should have the opportunity to express themselves through a range of creative media in order to enrich their understanding of artistic techniques. Children should have the opportunity to study a variety of key artistic figures who have sculpted the creative landscape and whose work has left a lasting impression on our world today.
In addition to this children should be able to see how artistic work has developed across the globe and how the works of historical civilisations impacted their way of life; demonstrating their customs and beliefs.
Finally, in Design and Technology, children should have the opportunity to undertake projects that involve planning for a desired outcome, undertaking the steps needed to construct certain works and evaluating the resulting item. This should all involve taking measurements, cutting and joining different materials and testing the final product. In this way, children will understand how practical objects can be made and develop ways of adapting and questioning their own methods in order to understand how to progress different ideas.
The national curriculum sets out four key aims for Art and Design:
•Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
•Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
•Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
•Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Progression in Art and Design will be assessed throughout each key stage through the children’s ability to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. We assess the children through:
•Observing children at work during lessons.
•Questioning the children in relation to their programme of study in order to assess their understanding.
•Assessing and (where relevant) showcasing work produce by the children.
The children in Year 3 take part in our cluster art project.
